Eating Mindfully

Most people love to eat! Are you one of them? What about this question...Do you take pleasure in eating? Though most of us love to eat, very few people actually take pleasure in eating, which has a different meaning entirely. Taking pleasure in eating means eating mindfully--slowing down and experiencing all of the elements of your food and your body receiving it. Adopting some simple techniques of eating mindfully will help you develop a greater appreciation for your body and your food and will have a big impact on your digestion and overall health and well-being.
Creating a Mindful Meal Experience
The next time you sit down to a meal, try these tips:
- First of all, sit down. 😉
- Make sure that there are no distractions. Turn off the TV and your computer and put your cell phone away.
- Take three deep breaths to slow your mind and your body. Become fully present in the moment.
- Take time to be grateful for the meal in front of you.
- Notice the food on your plate. Look at the display of colors and textures. Notice the aroma of each item.
- As you take a bite, observe the mechanics of your hand and how it moves the food to your mouth. Then pay attention to how your mouth and tongue accept it. Put your utensil down.
- Start chewing slowly, noticing how your tongue skillfully moves the food around. Try to chew at least 30 times.
- Swallow only when you receive the impulse to do so. Notice the food's movement all the way down to your stomach.
- Take another deep breath and pause before taking your next bite, savoring it just as much as the first, and so on.
- Listen to your body when it signals that you are full. Since you have given your brain enough time to keep up with your eating, you won't overeat.
Slowing Down Nourishes Your Body
Slowing down and taking pleasure in eating will allow your digestive system to do its best work. It can work more efficiently when your mind and body are relaxed, you've let the digestive process begin before taking your first bite, and you've eaten slowly so that you give your body the right amount of food to feel nourished but not stuffed. Love your food and your body. Eat mindfully.
