Spring Cleaning

Your Body & Mind

Happy Spring! The days are getting longer with the sunshine warming the earth, urging flowers to bloom in their vibrant spring colors and new leaves to sprout and unfold. Evidence of new life springing forth can be seen while watching Tom turkeys elegantly serenading the ladies, and the bellies of deer beginning to show the roundness of the impending birth of their baby fawns. One of the most noticeable signs of spring is when birds begin building new nests or sprucing up their old nests to make a clean, safe home for their babies. Like the birds, spring fever urges us to tidy up our home and yard, clearing out what is no longer needed and refreshing what remains. Who doesn’t enjoy a clean and tidy home that has been purged of a hodgepodge of unwanted items and clutter? Doesn’t spring cleaning your home create a spaciousness that seems to lift a weight off your shoulders and allows you to breathe in a sense of new possibilities for yourself?

Just as spring is a time for refreshening our home, it is also a perfect time to cleanse our body and mind, creating space for the birth of new growth for our health and well-being. Think of the lightness and rejuvenation you would feel with your body cleared of toxins and your mind free of old, outdated thoughts, beliefs and negativity. Taking the garbage out of your body and mind will enable you to feel light, bright and healthy.

I’ll guide you through a simple plan for cleansing both your body and mind. You will be so satisfied that your body and mind are as revitalized as your freshly cleaned home.

A Detoxed Body is a Healthy Body

We eat, drink and breathe in toxins every day—our air and water supply are tainted with chemicals, our food and drinks contain residue from pesticides, herbicides, and chemical processing. Toxins are in the paint on our walls, rugs on the floor, cleaning products under our sinks, and cosmetics and body products that we use on our skin. Our bodies are made for detoxing, but just like when we have accumulated too much junk in our homes and the pathways become blocked, so too, do the detoxifying pathways of our bodies become clogged. When that happens, our liver becomes congested, our digestive system becomes sluggish, and our body becomes set up for inflammation and dis-ease to pervade.

A focused plan of clean eating and using other detox tools for a period of at least seven days (longer is better, of course) can help clear out and give your digestive system a break so that it can reset to work optimally again. After eating clean for a time and then adding back in some of your old staples, you might find that certain foods and drinks don’t agree with you or don’t help you feel your best. Listen to your body—it knows what you should eat. Especially after getting clean, it will be like a fine-tuned instrument guiding you through each day, week and season of eating.

A Mind Free of Toxic Thoughts & Negativity

Just as our physical body takes in toxins from the environment, so too, does our mind take in and create toxic thoughts and negativity. We are exposed to judgments and limiting beliefs from the time we are very young by our well-meaning parents, relatives, and teachers. We compare ourselves to others and to society’s expectations for success. Most of us are not taught how to properly integrate our feelings, own our upsets, and see what lessons life’s circumstances hold for us. Instead, we hold trauma inside and fall into drama and addictions to try to cope.

A focused plan of detoxifying your mind of negativity and learning to be mindful of how you create with your thoughts is both freeing and empowering. Without the heaviness of unhappy feelings harbored about the past or trepidations about the future, your mind is clear to be present, creative, and alive. A clear mind will positively affect how you relate to others, as well as yourself. You will have a greater sense of awareness of what is yours to do in any situation, and you will be able to move more gracefully through even challenging life experiences because your mind, free from old emotional baggage, will guide you.

Moving through a detox of your body and mind will allow you to experience more health and vitality to help you create what you want in your life. After detoxing, you will feel renewed, balanced, and energized. Clearing out the old, makes way for better things to come. The spring cleaning of your body and mind prepares you for the birth of a brand new YOU!
